Micropile foundation systems were installed to replace existing abutments and piers for roadbed upgrade at three bridges along the Saw Mill Parkway in Westchester County, NY. The project was completed under the $40M Region 8 Bundles Bridges Design-Build Contract, part of an overall New York State Scour Critical/Flood Prone Bridge Program. Where the Parkway runs beneath two low overhead historic stone arch river bridges supporting local traffic routes, a 2-lane span of the 4-lane roadbed sits atop columns founded in the water, effectively creating a bridge beneath a bridge scenario. The complexities involved in installing the micropiles under the restrictive site conditions and within a limited timeframe is discussed by Frank DiSalvo, Project Manager for specialty geotechnical contractor Moretrench, and Stephen Mascia of General Contractor ECCO III Enterprises.
