Almost 100 years in the making, New York’s Second Avenue Subway opened on New Year’s Eve.
Moretrench is proud to have played a part in the first phase of this long anticipated extension, undertaking a number of diverse contracts. These include dewatering and groundwater treatment for excavation of the 800-ft-long launch box; ground freezing to overcome mixed faced conditions along the twin tunnel alignment; jet grouting to close windows at the intersections of secant pile and slurry wall excavation support; rock grouting to stabilize shallow, fractured rock cover above a hard rock TBM receiving shaft; and compensation grouting to stabilize the rubble foundations of existing multi-story buildings in concert with excavation for new deep sewers as part of the station construction.
The newly opened section runs for 1.8 miles and is anticipated to carry approximately 200,000 passengers daily. When completed the Second Avenue line will run 8.5 miles along Manhattan’s East Side.
