Moretrench is a strong advocate for assisting in the education of future engineers by, among other things, actively participating in programs geared towards giving college Seniors practical experience in industry disciplines. For the past two years, Moretrench has sponsored a Senior Design Group at the Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, NJ. “This is a capstone project that lasts the entire Senior year,” explains Project Manager James Myers. Myers, who is himself a Stevens graduate, served as project co-advisor with Project Manager Yaser Taheri. “Companies provide a real – life project to the school and students choose from several projects provided by several companies. The Moretrench-provided project will always involve underground design and geotechnical construction issues. A typical project will have four team members, and the project lasts the entire year.”
Recently, the student team from Stevens who selected the Moretrench project showcased the fruits of their efforts at a presentation hosted by Myers and Taheri at the company’s home office in Rockaway, NJ. The presentation, which lasted 30 minutes and constitutes part of their Fall Semester final exam, involved the design of a support of excavation system for a current Moretrench project. Elements of the project included researching various SOE systems, calculating loading conditions, selecting and designing a steel sheeted cofferdam with internal bracing, and designing a jet grout bottom seal. A highlight of the semester for the students was a visit to the active job site.
“It’s a win-win situation,” notes Myers. “Companies benefit from getting an in-depth look at potential future employees and the students gain confidence as well as experience in addressing real-world engineering challenges.”
