On April 28, 2016, the Rockaway office hosted our first official “Bring Your Child to Work” day. We had a great turnout, hosting 29 children, ranging in age from 5 to 13 years old. The day was packed with fun, games, treats and an introduction to Engineering practices.
The day kicked off with breakfast and an introduction to Moretrench from Executive Vice President Mike McHugh, followed by a tour of the office and shop. During the tour, the children had the opportunity to see construction equipment up close. They also visited their parent’s work area and took a photo with their parent as a souvenir.
Teamwork was the theme when groups were tasked with designing and building a bridge structure out of cardboard boxes or newspaper and masking tape. The specifications were rigorous, but everyone was up to the challenge and the results were impressive. We certainly spotted a future engineer or two!
After lunch with their parents, the children played a game of kickball outside. The highlight of the day was when Rizzo’s Reptiles presented their various reptiles and small mammals. They brought along an alligator, snakes, frogs...and a very large python. “The show was a hit with the children,” said Joanne Muccione, who organized and ran the event along with volunteers Magda Nicosia, Michele Walther, Bev Bischer, Mike Fattorusso, and Doris Zwarych. “Even some of our employees overcame their fear of reptiles and held the python!”
While this was the first time that Moretrench had hosted Take Your Child to Work day, it certainly won’t be the last. Joanne said “due to the overwhelming success of the day, we are looking forward to hosting this event again in the years to come”.
